The DDGC Germanists for Palestine Research Co-Op presents: Why Palestinians Pay for German Crimes, a conversation with renowned journalist, activist and political analyst Ali Abunimah.
Oct. 29, 11am PST | 2 pm ET | 8 pm CEST
The “Palästina-Kongress im Exil,” a two-day conference on student activism, international Palestine solidarity, and the German government’s role in the ongoing genocide in Gaza, was originally supposed to take place in Berlin in April 2024 before authorities raided the venue, arresting participants and even deporting a main speaker, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta. The event was rescheduled to be fully online on July 25-26 2024, and again faced violent suppression by Berlin police, with speakers facing fines and jail time if they went ahead with their talks. Ali Abunimah’s contribution to the rescheduled online conference analyzed placed German policy towards Palestinians in the context of the deliberate shortcomings of denazification in West Germany, the Federal Republic’s relationship of material support and ideological affinity with apartheid South Africa, and the history of collaboration and common cause made between European anti-Semites and early Zionist leaders. Two hours before his talk was scheduled to begin, Abunimah received a notice from the German government threatening him with fines and time in prison if he participated in the conference. He gave the talk anyway. You can find the recording of his talk and all others from the event here.
The DDGC Germanists for Palestine Co-Op invited Abunimah to discuss his planned presentation and reflect on the affair. The conversation will be moderated by Kumars Salehi (University of Pittsburgh) and Shoshana Schwebel (University of British Columbia), followed by a Q&A.
Ali Abunimah is co-founder and editor of The Electronic Intifada, as well as the author of the books The Battle for Justice in Palestine (2014) and One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse (2006).
